I struggled with my emotions a lot in 2022 (more on that later). I learnt a few things that helped me stop the downward spiral and want to share them in case they help others.
Note: I am not a therapist and I always recommend seeking therapy when thoughts and feelings are overwhelming. But I also encourage taking a proactive role in our own wellbeing. The more we know, the more we grow.
If you’re struggling with unpleasant feelings, try this:
1. Stop beating yourself up for feeling this way (these feelings may have become a habit unintentionally, a default way of being).
2. Remind yourself that there is no actual danger in this moment (your brain and body are just interpreting signals and reacting in a particular way).
3. Accept the feeling rather than resisting it (but begin to challenge the automatic beliefs that led to the feeling, only once you are feeling a little better).
Have you tried any of these before? Did they help? Do you have other tips to share?
